Your First Event: Purpose, Plan, and the Ask in the Room
What an event is for, the budget you can defend, the sponsor conversation, and the fund-a-need moment done without pressure. For the fundraiser who has just been handed the gala.
Through the K-12 Schools lens
This module fits its sector most directly: the inherited event is almost always the auction or fund-a-need night the school runs every year, planned by a parent committee rather than staff. The four-part podium script, mission present, invitation, levels, close, describes almost exactly what happens when a classroom video plays before the paddle-raise, and sponsors are often local businesses a parent already patronizes, which is why inviting the person rather than the logo matters so much here.

Learning objectives
- State what a fundraising event is for, distinguish gross from net revenue, and explain why an event is judged by relationships as well as by dollars.
- Build a full-cost event budget that includes staff and volunteer time, and set a net goal the board can defend.
- Invite a sponsor as a partner in the mission rather than a buyer of a logo, and run a fund-a-need moment that leaves the room free.
- Plan a first event on one page: purpose, audience, budget, roles, the ask, and the follow-up that makes it worth doing.
