How Fundraising Works

The map you weren't given: where the money comes from, why people give, and what a development program is made of.

Through the K-12 Schools lens

Your donor base is really two populations sharing one mailing list: current parents on a tuition treadmill giving out of love and obligation at once, and alumni families the school barely kept in touch with once the diploma was handed over. The retention cliff has a built-in deadline here that other sectors don't face: a parent's giving relationship ends, structurally, the year their last child graduates, which means stewardship has to convert them into alumni donors before that date or lose them for good.
