Your First Donor Conversations
Scripts, practice, and nerve for the conversations that fund your mission: discovery visits, thank-you calls, and your first ask.
Through the K-12 Schools lens
For a school, the discovery visit usually happens with a current parent at pickup or a grandparent at a school event, and the no-ask promise matters because parents already feel solicited constantly: tuition, the auction, the annual fund letter. The objection "we already give enough through tuition" deserves the direct answer this module teaches: tuition covers instruction, and a gift funds what tuition does not, financial aid, a program, the fund-a-need everyone claps for at the gala. The first three thank-you calls in the practice plan work especially well with room parents and volunteers, who are already primed to feel appreciated rather than solicited.

Learning objectives
- Request and run a discovery visit in which the donor does most of the talking and no gift is asked for.
- Record what a donor cares about in their own words within 24 hours of a visit, along with the permission they gave and the next step promised.
- Schedule an ask meeting with its purpose named, deliver a specific amount for a specific outcome, and hold the silence that follows.
- Translate common donor objections into what they usually mean and respond to each with thanks, a clarifying question, and no pressure.
- Complete a 30-day practice plan that sequences ten real conversations from thank-you calls to a first ask.
