Your First Donor Conversations
Scripts, practice, and nerve for the conversations that fund your mission: discovery visits, thank-you calls, and your first ask.
Through the International NGOs lens
A discovery visit for an international NGO's donor often has to work harder for trust than in most sectors, since the donor has usually never set foot in the country where the mission operates, and the genuine listening this module teaches is what starts to close that distance. The objection "how do I know this actually gets there" is a request for proof of reach, and the honest answer names the reporting the organization actually has, not a promise beyond what it can show. Ten conversations in thirty days is a reasonable target for sponsors who already give consistently but have never been asked what first connected them to the mission.

Learning objectives
- Request and run a discovery visit in which the donor does most of the talking and no gift is asked for.
- Record what a donor cares about in their own words within 24 hours of a visit, along with the permission they gave and the next step promised.
- Schedule an ask meeting with its purpose named, deliver a specific amount for a specific outcome, and hold the silence that follows.
- Translate common donor objections into what they usually mean and respond to each with thanks, a clarifying question, and no pressure.
- Complete a 30-day practice plan that sequences ten real conversations from thank-you calls to a first ask.
