Transformational Philanthropy: The Institution's Relationship With Its Largest Donors

Principal-gift strategy at the institutional level: the CEO's, the board's, and the CDO's roles, gift agreements and naming, and keeping the gift voluntary when the number is large enough to change the organization.

Through the K-12 Schools lens

At a school this size, a transformational gift usually comes from a family whose children or grandchildren went through the classrooms being funded, and the head of school carries the relationship the way this lesson's CEO does. The naming, a wing, a program, an endowed faculty chair, gets negotiated with a board that has to think about a fifty-year horizon in a building most of its members remember as students themselves. Waiting for the gift to mature, rather than chasing it against a capital campaign date, respects a family that has already given the school its children.

Learning objectives

  • Describe the conditions in donor, institution, and leadership under which a transformational gift becomes possible, and why such gifts cannot be forced or scheduled.
  • Assign and coordinate the roles of CEO, board chair, campaign leadership, and CDO across a principal-gift relationship, including who invites, who negotiates, and who accompanies.
  • Structure a principal gift agreement that honors donor intent, protects the institution's independence, and states the terms of naming and its removal.
  • Analyze a principal gift that took years to mature and identify the decisions that kept the relationship true while it waited.
