The Event Portfolio: Signature, Cultivation, and Sponsorship Strategy
Which events to run and why, the sponsorship program as a relationship rather than a rate card, and the volunteer committee that carries it. The director's view of events as a portfolio with a purpose for each.
Through the International NGOs lens
Community rarely shows up as a domestic event for this sector, since the people gathered are usually a diaspora or donor chapter rather than program participants, so a portfolio review has to ask honestly whether an annual gala functions as cultivation for the home-country donor base rather than assuming it connects to the field program at all. Sponsorship as a year-round relationship matters because cross-border partners, an airline, a remittance company, a diaspora-owned firm, often want a multi-year commitment tied to program outcomes rather than a single event's visibility.

Learning objectives
- Design an event portfolio in which each event has a stated purpose (revenue, cultivation, recognition, community), a budget matched to that purpose, and a measure that fits it.
- Run sponsorship as a year-round relationship program with a small number of partners, rather than an annual sale of logo placement.
- Charter and support a volunteer event committee so that it carries the event and the relationships, and staff carry the follow-up.
- Analyze a decision to consolidate an event portfolio and identify what it changed for revenue, relationships, and staff.
