Planned Giving Without a Planned Giving Officer
You do not need a J.D. to start a legacy program. Bequests, beneficiary designations, and the marketing that surfaces them.
Through the International NGOs lens
Running a legacy program without a specialist is common for international NGOs, where staff capacity usually goes toward program delivery, and the two simple instruments this module names require no international legal complexity since they are executed entirely under the donor's own domestic law. The legacy society's name often draws on the organization's mission imagery rather than a founder, since many international donors connect to a cause more than a specific leader's legacy, and marketing it quietly through the same field-update channel that already builds trust fits naturally. The guide's caution against manufactured urgency matters especially here, where a donor's attachment is to a program abroad they will never see, managed by an organization whose whole relationship depends on not overselling.

Learning objectives
- Explain why bequests and beneficiary designations make up most planned gifts by count and describe who tends to leave them.
- Build a bequest prospect list from tenure and engagement rather than capacity.
- Launch a legacy society in one season: the name, the membership sentence, the enrollment form, the charter letter, and the records that outlive the staff.
- Raise legacy giving inside an ordinary donor visit, receive an intention with gratitude, and stay within the boundaries that keep the fundraiser out of legal and tax advice.
- Set up the standing channels and the annual letter that surface intentions, and run the response protocol within a week of each raised hand.
