Leading With the Invitation Framework: A Team That Asks Well

The seven movements as a management practice: coaching Pause, See, and Discern, reviewing a portfolio by relationship rather than pressure, and building a team whose asks stay invitations. The house methodology, taught to the person who leads others.

Through the International NGOs lens

Leading a team spread across country offices and time zones makes it hard to see donor conversations directly, so the discipline of reporting what was actually said, not just what was asked, in every review becomes essential rather than optional. For donors who will likely never visit a program, building a real picture of who someone is has to substitute for the in-person knowledge a domestic gift officer picks up by proximity, and donor trips are where a leader's own posture shows most clearly: checking what the team is carrying into a trip, fundraising goals or genuine hospitality, shapes whether it reads to donors as cultivation or as tourism.

Learning objectives

  • Explain how the seven movements of the Invitation Framework translate from an individual fundraiser's practice into a team's operating norms, metrics, and meetings.
  • Coach fundraisers in the three preparatory movements, Pause, See, and Discern, through structured conversations rather than pressure on outcomes.
  • Run a portfolio review that reads each relationship by its movement and its next honest step, and still reports what leadership and the board need.
  • Audit a team's posture toward donors and set the two or three changes that would make its asks more voluntary and its results more durable.
