The Base of the Pyramid: Annual Giving as Institutional Strategy
Participation, pipeline, and the annual program's role in feeding every other discipline, defended at the executive table against the campaign, the principal gift, and the budget cut that always comes for it first.
Through the Human Services lens
For a one-person shop, the ten-year projection can sound like a luxury when payroll is the worry this month, but the sustainer line in this module is the most usable part of it: a growing base of monthly donors is durable revenue in a sector where funding is otherwise volatile and everyone assumes someone else is covering the gap. The origin-share exercise, run once on whatever file exists, is often the first time a board sees that its handful of loyal small donors are the whole future pipeline.

Learning objectives
- Explain the annual program's role as the source of every other discipline's donors, and why it is the first budget cut and the most expensive one.
- Compute the feeder math: what share of major, planned, and campaign donors began as annual donors, how long the path took, and what participation and retention rates imply for the pipeline ten years out.
- Make the annual program's case at the executive table in one page, in the institution's terms.
- Audit the institution's pipeline feed and set the participation and retention targets the future depends on.
