Culture of Philanthropy: Leading Across the Organization

When program staff, finance, and the front desk understand their role in fundraising, the work gets easier. Building that culture is executive work.

Through the Human Services lens

The worry that donors exploit the people being served sits close to the central ethical question a shelter or food bank faces every time an appeal needs a face: a client in crisis is rarely positioned to say no to the organization keeping them housed, which makes voluntary, revocable consent a genuine safeguard rather than a formality. Because so many human-services shops are one person wearing five hats, building this culture is less about tearing down walls between departments and more about a single leader deciding, on purpose, that thanking and honest storytelling are part of the job from day one, and reporting back to program staff what a shared story actually raised is what keeps them willing to share the next one.
