Endowment & Legacy Strategy
Permanence as a product: building, marketing, and governing endowment, plus the blended gifts that fund it.
Through the Higher Ed lens
A university's endowment is usually the most mature version of this module's growth model already at work, named funds for scholarships and professorships built over generations, and the threshold question, permanence competing with the present, gets asked constantly between the annual fund's urgent needs and a donor's instinct to endow something with their name on it. Matured planned gifts are the dominant inflow this module describes, and a university's legacy society, often decades old, is functionally its endowment campaign running on a twenty-year settlement delay. The spending-rate arithmetic matters visibly here because a single endowed chair's annual payout is a number deans watch every year, which makes the policy lesson's guardrails a live budget conversation rather than a hypothetical.

Learning objectives
- Calculate an endowment's annual mission yield from its value and spending rate, and describe the three inflows that grow it.
- Present the threshold question, permanence or present, to a board as a real choice with the exchange rate and the conditions under which building endowment is right.
- Propose blended gift shapes matched to a donor's life stage and distinguish the enforceable current commitment from the revocable estate intention in the gift agreement.
- Outline the four policies an endowment needs before it is marketed: investment, spending, gift acceptance and naming, and the fund agreement.
- Explain how policies-first governance, a legacy society, blended gifts, and a written anti-raid process built a funded endowment from a standing start over a decade.
