Culture of Philanthropy: Leading Across the Organization
When program staff, finance, and the front desk understand their role in fundraising, the work gets easier. Building that culture is executive work.
Through the Higher Ed lens
The cold war this module names between program and development staff is a near-literal description of the faculty-advancement relationship on many campuses: a dean who sees a donor visit as an interruption to research, and a gift officer who has learned to work around faculty rather than with them, are both symptoms of the same gap. The honest response to a faculty member's "it's not in my job description" is smaller, chosen asks that development visibly trades something back for, and because a university has so many units with their own cultures, only a president or provost can put philanthropy into every dean's actual expectations, not the chief development officer alone.
