Donor Trust: Communications Governance and the Institutional Voice
Crisis communication, transparency, impact reporting to the whole community, and the policies that keep faith with donors when something goes wrong. Trust as the institution's product, governed rather than hoped for.
Through the Higher Ed lens
A university's decentralized structure, dozens of schools and units each with their own advancement staff, makes this module's decision-rights table unusually important: without a clear answer to who may say what to donors, a crisis involving one school can produce several different messages to the same donor pool within a day. The institutional voice matters because alumni giving is identity giving, and a communication that sounds like legal boilerplate rather than the university they remember spends trust with people who already have countless other claims on their loyalty. Crisis rehearsal matters especially for athletics, leadership transitions, and research questions, the recurring categories of higher-ed donor-trust events, and a CDO's seat at that table is often a newer addition to university governance than this module assumes.

Learning objectives
- Explain why donor trust is the institution's product, what builds it, what spends it, and why the executive governs communications rather than delegating them.
- Establish communications governance: a transparency standard, an institutional voice, and the decision rights for what the institution says to donors and when.
- Adopt a crisis communication protocol that tells donors the truth first, fast, and in the institution's own voice.
- Audit the institution's trust position and set the changes that would most protect it.
