Endowment & Legacy Strategy

Permanence as a product: building, marketing, and governing endowment, plus the blended gifts that fund it.

Through the Healthcare lens

An endowment in healthcare usually funds something that outlives any single campaign, a research chair, a service line, a program named for a grateful family, and the spending-rate arithmetic matters because donors evaluating a naming gift want to understand exactly what the annual payout will and will not cover against real operating costs. Matured planned gifts are frequently smaller and more frequent here than the single landmark bequest a school might receive, since a hospital foundation's donor base includes many grateful patients whose loyalty outlasted their treatment by decades. Governance carries added scrutiny: the naming addendum's standards have to anticipate a service line's own life cycle, since medical programs merge, close, or get renamed in ways a school's history rarely does.

Learning objectives

  • Calculate an endowment's annual mission yield from its value and spending rate, and describe the three inflows that grow it.
  • Present the threshold question, permanence or present, to a board as a real choice with the exchange rate and the conditions under which building endowment is right.
  • Propose blended gift shapes matched to a donor's life stage and distinguish the enforceable current commitment from the revocable estate intention in the gift agreement.
  • Outline the four policies an endowment needs before it is marketed: investment, spending, gift acceptance and naming, and the fund agreement.
  • Explain how policies-first governance, a legacy society, blended gifts, and a written anti-raid process built a funded endowment from a standing start over a decade.
