Endowment & Legacy Strategy
Permanence as a product: building, marketing, and governing endowment, plus the blended gifts that fund it.
Through the Faith-Based lens
Permanence is a natural sell in a faith community that already believes things last beyond a single lifetime, and framing an endowment gift as funding a ministry, a music program, tuition assistance, in a family's name for as long as the parish stands uses language this track's donors already believe. A legacy society built around long-time parishioners' bequests is often the endowment's real engine, more than any single capital ask, exactly as this module's growth model argues. Governance carries an extra layer beyond UPMIFA: a diocese or denominational body may have its own rules about what a parish endowment may hold, which makes the anti-raid clause worth writing down before a building crisis and a permanent fund tempt the same board.

Learning objectives
- Calculate an endowment's annual mission yield from its value and spending rate, and describe the three inflows that grow it.
- Present the threshold question, permanence or present, to a board as a real choice with the exchange rate and the conditions under which building endowment is right.
- Propose blended gift shapes matched to a donor's life stage and distinguish the enforceable current commitment from the revocable estate intention in the gift agreement.
- Outline the four policies an endowment needs before it is marketed: investment, spending, gift acceptance and naming, and the fund agreement.
- Explain how policies-first governance, a legacy society, blended gifts, and a written anti-raid process built a funded endowment from a standing start over a decade.
