Your First Event: Purpose, Plan, and the Ask in the Room
What an event is for, the budget you can defend, the sponsor conversation, and the fund-a-need moment done without pressure. For the fundraiser who has just been handed the gala.
Through the Environment lens
The inherited event is often a members' potluck or a small dinner tied to a campaign moment, where a sponsor's gift may need careful routing if the organization has both a c3 and a c4 arm and the event touches advocacy at all. The mission-is-present moment often works through a place rather than a person, a photograph of the land or water at stake, which changes what those two minutes before the ask actually show the room.

Learning objectives
- State what a fundraising event is for, distinguish gross from net revenue, and explain why an event is judged by relationships as well as by dollars.
- Build a full-cost event budget that includes staff and volunteer time, and set a net goal the board can defend.
- Invite a sponsor as a partner in the mission rather than a buyer of a logo, and run a fund-a-need moment that leaves the room free.
- Plan a first event on one page: purpose, audience, budget, roles, the ask, and the follow-up that makes it worth doing.
