Planned Giving Basics: Recognizing the Gift in Front of You
Bequests, beneficiary designations, and the signals a long-time donor sends; how to respond with gratitude and refer well. The gift most shops miss because nobody in year one was told to look.
Through the Arts & Culture lens
A patron who has held the same season subscription for fifteen or twenty years, even at a modest membership level, is the loyalty signal this module ranks above any single large gift, and arts organizations are often slower than other sectors to notice it because attention naturally flows to gala tables instead. Mentioning legacy giving in a season program or membership renewal costs nothing and reaches exactly the audience this module says responds, subscribers who have made the institution part of their life for decades. A beneficiary designation naming the museum or theater is a natural fit for a patron whose children may not share the same passion for the collection, which the signals worksheet's question about heirs, recorded only if volunteered, is built to surface gently.

Learning objectives
- Explain what a planned gift is, why bequests are the largest gifts most organizations ever receive, and why loyalty matters more than wealth in identifying them.
- Describe bequests and beneficiary designations in plain terms, including what the donor does, what the organization does, and what neither should say about tax.
- Respond to a donor who mentions a legacy intention with gratitude, record it correctly, and refer the conversation to the right person.
- Read the organization's file for the signals of legacy readiness and produce a short list for the ED.
