Your First Donor Conversations
Scripts, practice, and nerve for the conversations that fund your mission: discovery visits, thank-you calls, and your first ask.
Through the Arts & Culture lens
The discovery visit here usually grows out of a subscriber relationship, someone who has bought season tickets for a decade, and the shift from patron of the box office to donor of the institution is exactly what the no-ask promise is designed to make possible. The objection "I already pay for tickets" is really a request to understand what a gift buys that a ticket does not, access to rehearsals, a program ticket revenue alone cannot sustain. Practicing ten conversations a month works well against a subscriber list, since the ask, when it finally comes, is usually the next rung on a ladder the donor has already been climbing.

Learning objectives
- Request and run a discovery visit in which the donor does most of the talking and no gift is asked for.
- Record what a donor cares about in their own words within 24 hours of a visit, along with the permission they gave and the next step promised.
- Schedule an ask meeting with its purpose named, deliver a specific amount for a specific outcome, and hold the silence that follows.
- Translate common donor objections into what they usually mean and respond to each with thanks, a clarifying question, and no pressure.
- Complete a 30-day practice plan that sequences ten real conversations from thank-you calls to a first ask.
