The Event Portfolio: Signature, Cultivation, and Sponsorship Strategy

Which events to run and why, the sponsorship program as a relationship rather than a rate card, and the volunteer committee that carries it. The director's view of events as a portfolio with a purpose for each.

Through the K-12 Schools lens

Recognition is the purpose schools skip most, since nearly every event on the calendar is built around the auction's revenue goal, leaving the grandparent and past-parent donors who fund the endowment unthanked in any room of their own. The fewer-larger-longer sponsorship discipline is a real shift for schools used to a rate card of a dozen small local sponsors, and the accompanying season, a mid-year touch unrelated to the ask, is the piece schools most often skip once the auction committee disbands until next fall.

Learning objectives

  • Design an event portfolio in which each event has a stated purpose (revenue, cultivation, recognition, community), a budget matched to that purpose, and a measure that fits it.
  • Run sponsorship as a year-round relationship program with a small number of partners, rather than an annual sale of logo placement.
  • Charter and support a volunteer event committee so that it carries the event and the relationships, and staff carry the follow-up.
  • Analyze a decision to consolidate an event portfolio and identify what it changed for revenue, relationships, and staff.
