How Fundraising Works

The map you weren't given: where the money comes from, why people give, and what a development program is made of.

Through the Higher Ed lens

The revenue map still favors individuals, but your donor base fractures by class year, school, and athletic affiliation before it ever sorts by capacity, so a gift officer's first real job is figuring out which loyalty an alumnus is actually giving to. The retention cliff is visible every fall in participation-rate reporting: a graduate who gave once at reunion and never again is the statistic your advancement leadership already tracks, and it is why a case for support has to hold together across a dozen competing school and unit offices rather than assume one shared story.
