A grateful patient's first gift is rarely a casual transaction, so the retention math's warning against a receipt-like thank-you carries real weight: a hospital foundation's welcome sequence should acknowledge that this donor's connection began with something significant in their life, not just process the gift like every other. The 48-hour system's Tier 3 personal call works powerfully when it comes from someone connected to the department the family's gift honors, a nurse, a program coordinator, rather than only a development officer, since the family's trust is often in the people who cared for them specifically.
