Planned Giving Basics: Recognizing the Gift in Front of You
Bequests, beneficiary designations, and the signals a long-time donor sends; how to respond with gratitude and refer well. The gift most shops miss because nobody in year one was told to look.
Through the Healthcare lens
A grateful patient's bequest almost always names the hospital foundation specifically, often the exact department where they or a family member were treated, which makes the plain-terms distinction this module draws, general purposes versus a stated purpose, important to get right at intake. The loyalty signal here is frequently a donor who gave small, steady annual gifts for years after their own care ended, long after gratitude might have been expected to fade, and the referral discipline matters acutely: no fundraiser should ever discuss tax treatment or estate size with a patient or family. When the bequest arrives from an executor, honoring the restriction exactly, a gift to the cardiac unit, the nurse's name, is unmistakably where they meant it to go.

Learning objectives
- Explain what a planned gift is, why bequests are the largest gifts most organizations ever receive, and why loyalty matters more than wealth in identifying them.
- Describe bequests and beneficiary designations in plain terms, including what the donor does, what the organization does, and what neither should say about tax.
- Respond to a donor who mentions a legacy intention with gratitude, record it correctly, and refer the conversation to the right person.
- Read the organization's file for the signals of legacy readiness and produce a short list for the ED.
